BLOGTOBER #26: Halloween Costume Do’s and Don’ts

Here’s a quick post to just remind people what’s appropriate and perhaps not, for a Halloween costume in our modern day social climate.I use the word perhaps no because some of you may disagree as what is and isn’t appropriate.

Obviously, a little disclaimer is needed at the beginning of this post just to say that everything that I have commented is my own personal view. If some of you disagree with anything, or everything, that that’s absolutely fine. I wouldn’t expect each and everyone of you to agree with every point that I am about to make.

So here’s my list of Do’s and Don’ts of a Halloween Costume:

DO keep the lingerie for the bedroom. I don’t really think that wearing a lingerie set and adding a few ‘scary’ accessories or elements to it is really a halloween costume?

DO dress up as one of your biggerst female influencers, whether that’s Rosa Parks, Marilyn Monroe or Lady Gaga, empowering past and present female icons is a great idea.

DON’T dress up as somebody that you know. Taking the mick out of an ex, co-worker or friend that you may bump into during your night may sound like a good idea to begin with, until they see your photos on insta the next day.

DO create group looks. It could be just the two of you or a whole massive gang, wither way, I think it’s just great!

DON’T go too obscure. You may want to be something completely different to everyone else, but you don’t want to be explaining your outfit to each different person you meet throughout the night.

DO indulge your inner child. How many other days of the year can you dress up as anything you like? Want to go as an adult size transformer? Do it! A Disney princess? Go for it! Let your inner child out to play!

DO keep it simple, if that’s what you want. If you’re not a massive fan of dressing up, but also don’t want to be the odd one out, add a fun accessory like a mask, wings or head piece.

DON’T rely on heavy face paint/body paint/makeup/fake blood to create your look. It’s only going to sweat off you an hour in and then nobody will know what you’re supposed to be.

DON’T dress up as a race, culture or a generation of people i.e. ‘Sexy Native American’ or ‘Sexy Homeless Person’. It will just cause you more harm than good.

DO enjoy creating your looks. I’m not here to be the costume police, dress up as whatever you like. Just remember there will be a lot more people out and about then you may think. As long as you feel comfortable in your outfit then that’s all that matters!

I hope you all have great Halloween, and remember to stay safe!

A new post will be up tomorrow,

Love you all X

  1. I love FX makeup and alcohol-activated paints actually don’t sweat off since they’re pretty much “water proof”. Liquid latex is almost impossible to get off unless you peel that also!

I think it’s important to look at what kind of makeup and the quality you’ll be using depending on your Halloween night activities. What will work for a night at a haunted house might not work so well at a large party, etc.

Great reminder about not dressing up as something culturally insensitive. I have such a hard time keeping my mouth shut when I see “Sexy Native Savage” costumes every year.
